If you think one night of small school football is exciting, then a full slate of Thursday and Friday night games this week should make for some exhilarating week eight matchups.
SAVANNA VS QUINTON, 7 p.m. (Thursday)
The Savanna Bulldogs (3-4, 1-2 district) will look to get a second straight win in their final home game of the season against the Quinton Savages (3-5, 0-3 district) Thursday night.
In last week’s 58-28 win over Canadian, Savanna put up its highest point total of the season on its way to earning its first win in district play. The Bulldogs captured two of its three wins at home and will look to take advantage of the home crowd against one of B-1 District 4’s bottomfeeders.
Quinton suffered its third straight loss after getting blown out 53-6 by the top team in the district, nearly undefeated Dewar last week. The Savages have been able to put up points while also pitch shutouts and they will need to be able to keep pace with Savanna if they want to get their first win in district play.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
CANADIAN VS CADDO, 7 p.m. (Thursday)
Looking to get back on track as the season winds down, the Canadian Cougars (1-7, 0-3 district) will cap off a three-game road stint with a matchup against the Caddo Bruins (7-1, 3-0 district) Thursday night.
Canadian was able to put up its highest point total of the season (28) last week against Savanna, but it was not enough to surpass the Bulldogs who more than doubled that number in their 58-28 victory.
Meanwhile, Caddo continues to be on a tear, winning four straight games while 46 averaging points per game in that stretch. However, the Bruins last came out on top in a close 33-32 contest last week against Keota to remain undefeated in district play. In that game, the dynamic ground game of junior quarterback Cale Wigington and junior running back Boen Proctor combined for 291 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
HARTSHORNE VS HASKELL, 7 p.m.
After suffering their second straight loss, the Hartshorne Miners (6-2, 3-2 district) look to get back into the A-1 District 4 title race when they face the Haskell Haymakers (3-5, 2-3 district) at home Friday night.
Hartshorne ended up on the wrong side of a blowout, falling 50-21 to Pocola last week. While senior quarterbacks Brett Lindley and Carter Johnson were able to spread the ball around to four different 30+ yard receivers, the Miners defense was overmatched by Pocola’s dynamic offense. Indians senior running back A.J. Lyons-Jerrell had 135 rushing yards and a touchdown and wide receivers Ty Jerrell and Brayden Hardwick combined for 297 receiving yards.
Haskell on the other hand snapped its two-game winning streak last week after suffering its second shutout of the season, this time to Panama 51-0. The Haymakers simply couldn’t get anything going on offense with junior running back Mason Londagin leading the entire offense with 51 rushing yards.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
WILBURTON VS VALLIANT, 7 p.m.
In addition to continuing the quest for their first win, the Wilburton Diggers (0-8, 0-5 district) look to challenge another one of district 2A-II District 4’s top teams in a Friday night battle against Valliant (4-4, 4-1 district).
Wilburton once again fell short in last week’s game against undefeated Vian 56-13, but junior running back Jason Wilkett, who earned McAlester News-Capital Player of the Week honors, continued his stellar season tallying 216 rushing yards, 126 punt/kick return yards and two touchdowns.
Valiant may have an even record, but the team has been on a tear in district play and has challenged some of the top teams in the district. Since district play began, the Bulldogs have scored 48 points per game and outside of a 42-41 loss against Henryetta, they have allowed only 10 points to their opponents.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
