Introduction to
Lead Testing
Understanding the risks of lead is critical, especially in schools where young lives are at stake. Our Lead Testing section elucidates why it’s imperative to test for lead, how to recognize its presence, and the actions to undertake upon detection.
Health Effects of Lead Exposure
Protecting yourself and your loved ones from the harmful effects of lead exposure is crucial. Lead is a toxic metal that can cause significant health issues in both children and adults. However, it poses a greater risk to children, as their growing bodies absorb lead more easily and their developing nervous systems are more susceptible to its damaging effects.
The sooner lead exposure is detected, the better the chances of preventing serious health consequences. Our lead testing services at EMSL Analytical, Inc. are designed to detect the presence of lead and help you take the necessary steps to protect your family.
The health effects of lead exposure can vary based on age:

Children:
- Developmental delays and learning difficulties
- Behavioural issues
- Impaired growth
- Damage to the brain and nervous system
- Hearing problems
- Amenia

Adults:
- Reproductive issues (in both men and women)
- High blood pressure and hypertension
- Memory and concentration problems
- Joint and muscle pain
- Damage to the nervous system
- Digestive issues
Don’t let lead exposure jeopardize your family’s health. Our lead testing services are designed to identify potential sources of lead, allowing you to take the necessary actions to create a safer environment for your loved ones.
Where Can I Find Lead
Lead exposure can occur from various sources in our daily lives. Identifying these sources is critical to protect your health and the well-being of your family. Our lead testing services at EMSL Analytical, Inc. can help you detect lead in various materials and environments, allowing you to address potential risks.
Here is a comprehensive list of sources where lead can be found:

Dust and Paint
Lead dust can form when lead-based paint is disturbed, deteriorates, or through normal wear and tear. Lead paint can be found on a variety of painted surfaces, including wood, metal, and plaster. Paint chips containing lead can also pose a risk.

Surface Coating
In addition to paint, other surface coatings like varnishes, lacquers, and sealants may contain lead, especially in older buildings.

Water Sources
Lead can contaminate water sources like drinking water, well water, and other water supplies. This can occur through lead plumbing fixtures, pipes, or solder, leading to ingestion of lead-contaminated water.

Soil
Soil can be contaminated with lead from various sources, such as exterior paint, lead dust, and residues from the past use of leaded gasoline. This can be especially concerning in yards, gardens, or playgrounds where children may come into contact with the contaminated soil.

Food
Lead can contaminate fruits, vegetables, and other produce grown in lead-contaminated soil. Moreover, food stored or prepared in lead-glazed pottery, crystal, or porcelain may contain traces of lead.

Consumer Products
Some consumer products, including children's toys, jewelry, and other items, may contain lead. This is especially true for imported products and older items that were produced before stricter regulations were in place.

Plumbing Fixtures and Pipes
Older plumbing systems may have lead pipes, solder, or fixtures that can contribute to lead contamination in water supplies.

Ceramics and Pottery
Lead-glazed ceramics, pottery, and porcelain can leach lead into food or liquids stored or served in these containers.

Air
Sources of lead emissions vary from one area to another. At the national level, major sources of lead in the air are ore and metals processing and piston-engine aircraft operating on leaded aviation fuel. Other sources are waste incinerators, utilities, and lead-acid battery manufacturers. The highest air concentrations of lead are usually found near lead smelters. Lead may also be found in air from construction, remodeling, abatement and renovation activities involving lead based paint. As a result of EPA's regulatory efforts including the removal of lead from motor vehicle gasoline, levels of lead in the air decreased by 98 percent between 1980 and 2014.
By understanding the potential sources of lead exposure, you can take proactive measures to protect your health and the well-being of your family. Our lead testing services at EMSL Analytical, Inc. are designed to help you identify and address potential lead hazards, providing you with peace of mind and ensuring a safer environment for you and your loved ones.
